Disszertációm témája Patti Smith (1946) amerikai zenész, író, költő, képzőművész 2010 és 2020 között megjelent memoárjainak (Just Kids, M Train, Devotion, Year of the Monkey, The Book of Days) vizsgálata egy interdisztciplináris, komparatista elméleti keret segítségével. A vizsgálat középpontjában a művészi identitáskonstrukció(k) megalkotásának minden memoárban megjelenő sajátosságaira helyezem a hangsúlyt, rámutatva egyes visszatérő, tendenciózus elemekre, és az egyes memoároknak a szerző pályájában betöltött szerepének elemzésén keresztül. A Smith által megalkotott különféle művészi identitáskonstrukciók (múzsa-művész dilemmája, özvegy, detektív, fotográfus) véleményem szerint szoros összefüggésben állnak Smith nőiségtapasztalatával, és a szövegeiben állandó intertextusként jelenlévő Arthur Rimbaud művészetének szubverzív olvasatával. A női és zenész szerepek konfliktusait Smith Kölykök című memoárjával számos alkalommal párhuzamba állított memoárral, Kim Gordon A Girl in a Band (2015) című szövegén keresztül szemléltetem.

The subject of the dissertation is an examination of the memoirs of Patti Smith (b. 1946), published between 2010 and 2020—Just Kids, M Train, Devotion, Year of the Monkey, and The Book of Days—through an interdisciplinary and comparative theoretical framework. At the core of this study is an analysis of the specific modalities through which artistic identities are constructed in each memoir. Particular attention is given to recurring and programmatic elements, as well as to the function each text fulfills within the broader trajectory of the author’s career. I argue that the various artistic identity formations articulated by Smith—such as the muse–artist dichotomy, the figure of the widow, the detective persona, and the photographer—are closely intertwined with her experience of femininity and with her subversive engagement with the work of Arthur Rimbaud, whose presence operates as a persistent intertext throughout her writings. Furthermore, I examine the tensions between female identity and the role of the musician through a comparative reading of Kim Gordon’s memoir A Girl in a Band (2015), which has frequently been juxtaposed with Smith’s autobiographical prose. One of the central claims of this dissertation is that Smith’s memoirs generate multiple, dynamic constructions of artistic identity that remain in continuous transformation while simultaneously entering into dialogue with one another.
