Mobility Writers in–between Multiculturalism and Transculturality: Case Studies in Canadian Literature

Ez a tanulmány megvizsgálja a kanadai etnikai kisebbségek esetét a multikulturalizmusról szóló politikai nyilatkozat előtt, majd összehasonlítja azt az etnikai kisebbségek esetével a multikulturalizmus politikájának deklarálása után. A vizsgálat a 20. század eleji kanadai magyar etnikum esetének tanulmányozásával történik. Ezután a tanulmány arra törekszik, hogy feltárja az etnikai kisebbségek esetét Kanadában 1971 után, mivel a megvitatott jelentős kérdés a transzkulturális diskurzus kérdése. A tanulmány középpontjában azok az etnikai kisebbségi írók állnak, akik az Én és a többség kapcsolatát keresik, mivel ezek az írók személyes tapasztalataiktól függenek, amikor egyik helyről a másikra mozognak. Ebben a tanulmányban elsősorban azokra az írókra helyezik a hangsúlyt, akik különféle kulturális gyökerekkel rendelkező bevándorló családokból származtak: magyar – kanadai (John Marlyn), iraki kanadai zsidó (Naim Kattan) és Srí Lanka-kanadai (Michael Ondaatje). Ennek a három írónak a Halál bordái, a búcsú Babilon és a Futás a családban elemzésével készült szövegek elemzésével ez a tanulmány feltárja az etnikai többség szerepét és hatásuk mértékét az etnikai kisebbségek integrációjára a kanadai társadalomban. A multikulturalizmus politikájának hatása etnikai identitásuk és kulturális örökségük megőrzésével elősegíti a kisebbségek beilleszkedését a kanadai társadalomba. E tanulmány megállapításai azt állítják, hogy az etikai kisebbségi írók két célt értek el a kanadai multikulturalizmus politikájának segítségével: egyrészt lehetővé teszik etnikai hovatartozásuk dinamikájának fenntartását, másrészt transzkulturális párbeszéd kialakítását teszik lehetővé a többséggel, hogy segítsék őket beilleszkedni a kanadai társadalomba.

This study investigates the case of ethnic minorities in Canada before the Multiculturalism Policy declaration and then compares it with the case of ethnic minorities after the declaration of Multiculturalism Policy. The examination is through studying the case of Hungarian ethnicity in Canada at the beginning of the twentieth century. Then, the study moves to explore the case of ethnic minorities in Canada after 1971 as the significant matter which is discussed is the matter of the transcultural discourse. The focus of this study is on ethnic minority writers who looks for the relationship between the Self and the majority as these writers depend on their personal experiences during their mobility from one place to another. In this study, the emphasis particularly is on writers who descended from immigrant families with various cultural roots: they are Hungarian–Canadian (John Marlyn), Iraqi Jewish Canadian (Naim Kattan), and Sri Lankan–Canadian (Michael Ondaatje). After analyzed the texts of the three writers Marlyn’s Under the Ribs of Death, Kattan’s Farewell Babylon, and Ondaatje’s Running in the Family, this study reveals the role of the ethnic majority and the extent of their impact on the integration of ethnic minorities in Canadian society at the beginning of 20th century. It also reveals the effect of the Multiculturalism Policy on ethnic minorities and how it helps them to integrate into the majority community. The findings of this study assert that ethic minority writers achieved two goals with the help of the Canadian Multiculturalism Policy: first, they enable to sustain the dynamic of their ethnicity by preserving their ethnic identity and cultural heritage, and the second, they enable to create a transcultural dialogue with the majority to help their communities to integrate into Canadian society.
